House finches have a not undeserved reputation for being aggressive to other birds. Unlike most of the other visitors to our feeder they will stay on it and eat seed after seed. While they know their...
View ArticleA Tufted Titmouse
I caught one of “our” tufted titmice eating a sunflower seed. This is a stop-frame video with somewhat lame music (feel free to ignore — it’s from Adobe’s free stock clips). One of the difficulties...

Seed Caching
I hadn’t known this until I caught it on camera, somewhat accidentally, but nuthatches cache seeds for eating later. I’m not the first, by a long shot, to observe this and many small birds — like...
View ArticleA little squirrel biology
While I’ve been filming the birds at my Huntsville feeder, I’ve also been watching the squirrels. One of the biggest and baddest of the lot is a male with a torn ear. This boar seems to be the dominant...

I visited the Wheeler NWR this morning. It opens at nine am and it is by far best to be there at 9:01 because of both the light (from the east) and the birds. After about 10, the birds move away from...

And now for something different - Green Sea Turtles
Something of a feel-good story. At least as far as it goes. My wife and I had a chance to visit Punalu’u Black Sands beach in Hawaii. This is one of the last refuges of the endangered Green Sea Turtle....
